Abstract
One of the major debates in the field of primary calcium stone-formation is centered round the role of diet in the causation of the disorder. Indeed, since the time of Hippocrates various dietary factors have been suggested to be important in causing stones, including lime-rich water, soft water, high amounts of dairy foods, high oxalate, high sugar, high salt, low salt, low fibre and high protein. The suggestions are as numerous and as heterogeneous as the patients with the disorder. This review sets out to assess the evidence as it stands at the present time.
