Abstract
Status Epilepticus (SE): a seizure persisting for a sufficient length of time or is repeated frequently enough to produce a fixed and enduring epileptic condition:
-
Specific duration of unremitting seizures historically were arbitrarily assigned to 30 min by experts in the field
-
Subsequently shorter seizure epochs have been emphasized as SE
-
Based on typical seizure duration of 1–2 min, SE should likely be considered in seizure events >5–10 min in length
-
Some reports of 10–29 min seizures having spontaneous resolution without therapy, but consensus is that this represents a small population, and a higher risk-benefit ratio exists in not treating such patients as SE
