Seit alters her werden ärztliche Eingriffe ambulant vorgenommen. So beschreibtbereits Homer die chirurgische Versorgung von Pfeilverletzungen, und in Alexandria/Ägypten war die Technik der ambulanten Gefäßligatur bekannt. Jedenfalls wissen wir von den Hospitälern im römischen Reich und im Mittelalter, dass sie nur zur Pflege von Kranken genutzt wurden und nicht zur Durchführung chirurgischer Eingriffe oder für eine stationäre Betreuung nach einem chirurgischen Eingriff.
