Abstract
The aim of the physical and radiological examination is (1) to accurately diagnose a meniscal lesion and define its characteristics (see chapter: Classification), (2) to search for any concurrent lesions and (3) to provide guidelines for the appropriate surgical treatment, depending on the above-mentioned findings. Two situations that must be clearly distinguished are a meniscal lesion following a recent or prior injury to the knee and a symptomatic meniscal lesion in a patient presenting with spontaneous knee pain.s characteristics (see chapter: Classification), (2) to search for any concurrent lesions and (3) to provide guidelines for the appropriate surgical treatment, depending on the above-mentioned findings. This issue will be addressed in the chapter on indications.
