Abstract

Since the work of Jack Burke (1961), it has been clearly established that true prophylaxis in surgical patients means preoperative administration of the prophylactic agent in such a way that all tissues encountered during surgery will have a therapeutic level of the agent present. This clearly means that true prophylaxis can only be applied in elective surgery or — with regard to fractures — when deciding to operate on a closed fracture.
