Abstract
Child psychiatry has only existed for the last 28 years in Iceland. For decades the main emphasis in the development of child psychiatry has been on promoting the clinical services but the speciality has not as yet been exactly defined by health authorities. Today the main emphasis is to promote the academic situation. The speciality was first inaugurated in medicine in 1970 but the speciality requirements have since then been twice modified in 1986 and 1997. In 1997 the speciality was called “Child and Adolescent Psychiatry” but earlier “Child Psychiatry”.
