Zusammenfassung
An den Verbindungsstellen axonaler Endigungen einer Nervenfaser mit Nerven-, Muskel- oder Drüsenzellen, an den Synapsen also, wird das Aktionspotential bzw.die in ihm enthaltene Information auf die nachgeschaltete Zelle übertragen [12]. Die Überleitung erfolgt gelegentlich direkt (elektrische Synapse), meist aber über die Freisetzung von chemischen Substanzen, die Transmitter oder Überträgerstoffe genannt werden (chemische Synapse). Aktivierung einer Synapse führt entweder zur Erregung oder zur Hemmung der nachgeschalteten Zelle. Es gibt also erregende und hemmende Synapsen. Synapsen haben Ventilfunktion, d. h. sie übertragen nur von der präsynaptischen auf die postsynaptische Seite, sie sind, besonders im Zentralnervensystem, oft lernfähig (plastisch), d. h. sie übertragen z. B. bei häufiger Benutzung besser als bei seltener, und sie sind die Wirkstellen zahlreicher Pharmaka, wie z. B. der Narkotika, der psychotropen Pharmaka und der Suchtmittel [1,7].
