Zusammenfassung
Unter Thanatologie versteht man die Lehre vom Tod und den Leichenerscheinungen. Im Rahmen der Leichenschau ist zunächst der Tod sicher festzustellen, daran schließen sich die Feststellung der Todesursache, der Todeszeit, Qualifikation der Todesart etc. an. Weiterhin sind seuchenhygienische Aspekte (Infektionsschutzgesetz) zu beachten. Die Obduktion zur Klärung von Grundleiden und Todesursache wird in Deutschland nur noch in erschreckend geringem Ausmaß (ca. 3–4 % der Todesfälle) durchgeführt, gerichtliche Obduktionen nach § 87 ff. StPO in 2 % der Todesfälle. Zur Schätzung der Todeszeit werden Ausprägungsgrad und Fortschreiten von Leichenerscheinungen und supravitaler Reaktionen genutzt. Leichenschau und Obduktionen sind an gesetzliche Grundlagen gebunden, die teilweise nicht bundesgesetzlich, sondern landesgesetzlich geregelt sind. Tauchen erst einige Zeit nach Todeseintritt Verdachtsmomente auf, muss eine objektive Todesursachenklärung nach Exhumierung erfolgen.
