Abstract
Endophthalmitis is an inflammation of the inner contents of the globe affecting the aqueous and the vitreous. Without treatment, it could cause loss of vision and other serious ocular complications. Infectious endophthalmitis is usually caused by a bacteria or fungi. The globe is inoculated by these organisms either exogenously, after ocular surgery or open-globe injury, or endogenously in immunocompromised patients with underlying systemic infection. Diagnosis is made clinically, with its typical signs and symptoms, supported by microbiologic testing and imaging techniques. Prompt diagnosis is crucial to be able to initiate immediate treatment with proper antibiotics. Cases that are refractory to medical treatment may eventually necessitate anophthalmic surgery to control the infection.
