Abstract

The great majority of major peripheral emboli are cardiac in origin. Atherosclerosis has replaced rheumatic valvular disease as the commonest cardiac pathology, myocardial infarction or atrial fibrillation being the underlying event in most cases1,2. Other possible cardiac sources include prosthetic valves, endocarditis or atrial myxoma.
