Abstract

Approximately 75% of patients with an ischaemic stroke syndrome have at least one obstructive arterial lesion at an extracranial site1. By far the most important of these sites is the carotid bifurca¬tion and surgery of this area is considered in the present chapter. Reconstruction of the vertebral artery and aortic arch vessels is dealt with in Chapter 10.
