Abstract
I will describe in this chapter how people use compensation as a strategy to optimise their subjective well being. When people feel dissatisfaction in one life domain they deflate the importance of that domain and inflate the importance of other life domains in which they have experienced satisfaction. I will describe the compensation principle in some detail. Furthermore, I will describe at least possible mechanisms or conditions in which compensation is proven evident. These are related to a fixed sum of resources and personal needs.
