Psychische Folgen des Übergewichts im Grundschulalter

Abstract

Zusammenfassung. Die Zahl übergewichtiger Kinder nimmt international und auch in Deutschland zu. Die psychischen Begleitumstände und Folgen kindlichen Übergewichts bei Kindern und Jugendlichen sind noch nicht umfassend untersucht. Im Rahmen der Mannheimer Risikokinderstudie wurden übergewichtige Achtjährige (BMI > 95. Perzentil) hinsichtlich Selbstkonzept, sozialer Anpassung und psychischer Auffälligkeiten im Alter von acht, elf und 15 Jahren mit normalgewichtigen Altersgenossen verglichen. Übergewichtige Kinder litten vermehrt unter sozialen Problemen im Kontakt zu Gleichaltrigen, zeigten eine geringere soziale Anpassung und hatten zu Beginn der Pubertät ein negativeres Selbstbild. Diese Folgen des Übergewichts im Kindesalter ließen sich bis ins Jugendalter nachweisen. Kindliches Übergewicht kann weitreichende Auswirkungen auf die Lebensumstände im Jugendalter haben. Die Befunde unterstreichen die Bedeutung präventiver Maßnahmen zur Verringerung der sozialen Defizite von Übergewichtigen und zur Verbesserung der Integration in die Peergruppe.


Psychological consequences of overweight in elementary school-age children

Abstract. Despite the increasing number of overweight children internationally as well as in Germany, little is still known about possible psychological correlates and consequences in children and adolescents. 341 overweight 8-year-olds (body mass index > 95. percentile) from the Mannheim Study of Risk Children were compared to peers with normal weight regarding measures of self-concept, social adjustment, and psychopathology at the ages of 8, 11, and 15 years. Overweight children at 8 years suffered more from social problems, showed a deficient social adjustment, and had a more negative self-concept at the beginning of puberty, compared to peers with normal weight. These psychological consequences could be followed into adolescence. The results underline the importance of preventive actions, which should compensate for social deficits of overweight children and promote integration into the peer group.
