Die bakterielle Arthritis ist ein Notfall und eine sehr ernstzunehmende diagnostische und therapeutische Herausforderung. Sie kann durch eine erhöhte Erregerzahl, Erregervirulenz sowie Abwehrschwäche des betroffenen Organismus verursacht werden (Brackertz 1981) und führt bei verzögerter Diagnostik und/oder Therapie zur Zerstörung des betroffenen Gelenkes. Bakterielle Gelenkinfekte erfordern deshalb eine rasche Diagnostik und zeitnahe konsequente Behandlung (Jerosch 2004). Bakterielle Arthritiden sind insgesamt gesehen seltene Ereignisse. Dies mag auch einer der Ursachen dafür sein, dass die Diagnose nich timmer zeitnah gestellt wird.
