Part of the book series: Keio University Symposia for Life Science and Medicine ((KEIO,volume 3))

Summary

The objective of the study reported in this chapter was to observe the therapeutic effect of acupuncture for the treatment of somatoform disorders. One hundred and twenty outpatients and inpatients with somatoform disorders were randomly assigned to an acupuncture plus psychotherapy group and a psychotherapy group. Cognitive psychotherapy was used in both treatment groups. Treatments lasted for 8 weeks. Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD), the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HRSA), and the Four-Grade Clinical Assessment were used to assess the clinical effectiveness. The percentage of patients responding to acupuncture plus psychotherapy was significantly higher than that of patients treated with psychotherapy (P < 0.01). The HRSD and HRSA total scores decreased much more in patients treated with acupuncture plus psychotherapy than in patients treated with psychotherapy alone (P < 0.05, P < 0.01, respectively). Acupuncture plus psychotherapy had better therapeutic effects for patients with somatoform disorders than psychotherapy alone.
