Summary
The stresses affecting the feet of various primates during phases of rest or relatively slow motion were analysed. Arbitrary values were assigned systematically to all variable factors until that combination of values yielding the greatest stress was found. Further analysis was based on this condition. The theoretical analysis was then compared with the results of photoelastic experiments.
The foot is subjected to bending moments caused by the counterpressure to the body weight against the balls and the heel as well as the pull exerted by the m. triceps surae and the body weight itself. The bending stresses are reduced by the aponeurosis plantaris and the tendons of those muscles inserting into the foot. A certain portion of the total bending moments is not eliminated by these structures. This remainder exerts compressive forces on the bones and joint cartilages of the dorsal side of the foot and tensile force on the ligaments of the plantar side. Seen in cross section, the tissues are distributed so as to offer the greatest resistence to the stresses in the respective regions.
In man the bending moments are exceptionally large as his m. triceps surae is very strong and the mm. flexores are relatively weak. The high longitudinal arching and the general rigidity of the human foot allow it to sustain high bending moments with relatively little expenditure of energy and material. The heel, in particular, is reinforced by plantar muscles which do not fulfill the same function in other primates.
Most nonhuman primates must have extremely strong flexors because the toes are very long. These flexors reduce the bending moments in the foot and allow a longer and much less rigid foot construction.
In Cercopithecoidea, Lemuriformes, Lorisiformes and some Cebidae the strong plantar flexing moment of the long flexors in the ankle joint lessens the burden of the m. triceps. This effect is of such magnitude that the resultant of all counterpressures acting against the parts of the foot (Traglinie) is shifted in a distal direction and the heel raised from the ground. The stresses affecting the fore-foot of such semiplantigrade species are essentially the same as in plantigrade animals.
