Developmental Anomalies of the Anterior Segment and Globe

  • Chapter
Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus

Abstract

Developmental anomalies of the anterior segment include developmental disorders involving the cornea, iris, angle, and lens. These abnormalities were previously referred to as “the anterior chamber cleavage syndrome”90 or “mesodermal dysgenesis of the iris and cornea.”2 However, the concepts of embryology on which these terms are based are no longer accepted, and the terms should not be used. Anterior segment dysgenesis in a general term used to represent the spectrum of developmental anterior segment disorders, but there is a specific entity called anterior segment mesenchymal dysgenesis (ASMD) 38 that is discussed later. It is suggested that the term anterior segment developmental anomalies (ASDA) be used.
