Acculturation and Culture: A Critical Factor for Asian Americans’ Health

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Handbook of Asian American Health

Abstract

Acculturation is a broad and complex process that involves participating in the mainstream culture while maintaining the heritage culture, in multiple dimensions such as behavior, knowledge, values and identity. As an important component of Asian Americans’ daily lives, acculturation and cultural factors are associated with how Asian Americans think about and deal with health issues. This chapter will first briefly review the concept of acculturation as the foundation for understanding its impact on Asian Americans’ health. The chapter will then highlight aspects of the acculturation process that play an important role in Asian Americans’ mental and physical health, as well as their utilization of health services.
