Part of the book series: Issues in Clinical Child Psychology ((ICCP))

Abstract

This chapter reviews research on the co-occurrence of psychiatric disorders in children, adolescents, and adults with intellectual disability (ID) and autism spectrum disorders. Current generation research is found to suggest that there is a greater risk for psychiatric disorder in these individuals, particularly children and adolescents, and a greater occurrence of psychopathology. Assessment and diagnosis of psychiatric problems in individuals with ID is complicated by the nature and features of the developmental disorder and the high co-occurrence of challenging behaviors which may be independent of a psychiatric disorder. However, by incorporating careful observation, caregiver input, and direct behavioral assessment, it is possible to develop a diagnosis and a formulation that determines environmental influences on behavior problems and integrates behavioral and psychiatric findings. In addition, an integrated formulation leads to a comprehensive intervention plan, as is shown in several data-based case exemplars. Finally, caution and recommendations are given for attending to potential suicidal presentations and individuals with a history of exposure to traumatizing events.
