Genetic Alterations of Streptococcus Mutans’ Virulence

Abstract

Our laboratory has pursued the study of mutants of Streptococcus mutans with characterized phenotypic defects to assess the significance of specific traits in the causation of caries at various tooth surfaces. We have devised and executed mutant selection schemes yielding isolates defective in putatively important virulence characteristics. We have then conducted biochemical, physiological, and morphological studies, as well as assays of the virulence of these mutants, in comparison with their unaltered wild type (WT) progenitors.
