Abstract
Empirical studies have successfully demonstrated the connection between adolescent delinquent behavior and illicit substance abuse (Bachman, O’Malley, & Johnston, 1978; Brook, Whiteman, Gordon, Nomura, & Brook, 1986; Kandel, 1978, 1980; White, Johnson, & Gozansky-Garrison, 1985). However, the specific nature and direction of the relationships continue to be debated (Altschuler & Brounstein, 1991; Elliott, Huizinga, & Menard, 1989; Huizinga, Menard, & Elliott, 1989; Watters, Reinarman, & Fagan, 1985; White, Pandina, & La-Grange, 1987).
