Health and Disease among Hispanics

  • Chapter
Handbook of Immigrant Health

Abstract

The racial and ethnic composition of the United States is markedly influenced by a rapidly growing Hispanic population. From 1900 to 1996, the Hispanic population increased from less than 1% of the total U.S. population to almost 9% (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1993). Estimated at 22.8 million, Hispanics are projected to be the largest ethnic group by the year 2000 (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1993).
