Der Begriff „Metakognition“ (vom Griechischen „meta“ für „über“ und vom Lateinischen „cognitio“ für „Erkenntnis“) subsumiert mentale Prozesse, die die Beschreibung, Bewertung und Kontrolle der eigenen Informationsverarbeitung zum Inhalt haben (das „Denken über das Denken“). Metakognition wird in diesem Kapitel eng auf die Übereinstimmung subjektiver und objektiver kognitiver Leistungen bezogen sowie auf eher qualitative kognitive Bewertungen (z. B. subjektive Antwortsicherheit, Lebendigkeit des Gedächtniseindrucks). Verwandte Domänen wie (soziales) Einfühlungsvermögen (sog. Theory of Mind) werden in ▸ Kap. 27 behandelt.
