Kinder erleben häufig unvorhersehbare starke Schmerzen bei invasiven medizinischen Eingriffen wie z.B. Lumbalpunktionen, die mit intensiven negativen Gefühlen verbunden sein können. Diese Eingriffe lösen Ängste und Stressempfinden sowohl beim Kind als auch bei den Eltern aus, was zu einer verstärkten Schmerzwahrnehmung einerseits und Problemen bei der Durchführung des Eingriffes andererseits führen kann (Uman et al. 2008). Invasive medizinische Eingriffe gehören mit zu den am meisten gefürchteten Erlebnissen in der Kindheit (Broome et al. 1990).
