Abstract

Gastric volvulus (GV) is a rare pathological condition due to the torsion of the stomach on its longitudinal (organoaxial GV) or transversal axis (mesenterico-axial GV). It may occur as a life-threatening emergency or as a chronic status, depending on the entity of foregut obstruction. In acute onset, early diagnosis and emergent surgical treatment (gastric derotation and fixation) are mandatory to reduce morbidity and mortality. In subacute or intermittent presentation, the clinical manifestations could appear irregularly and may go underdiagnosed. In these cases the conservative management may be useful.
