Soziale Angst” wird als Oberbegriff für eine Vielzahl von Konzepten verwendet, die sich auf ein Unbehagen in sozialen Situationen beziehen.

Ängste vor Mitmenschen, die einem nicht vertraut sind, sind dem menschlichen Wesen eigen. BeiSozialphobikern, könnte man meinen, läge lediglich eine extreme Angst gegenüber Mitmenschen vor.Aber der Sozialphobiker misstraut v. a. selnen eigenen Fähiqkelten.So erklärt sich seine Angst, Erwartungen nicht gerecht werden oder Bewertungen nicht standhalten zu können. Diesoziale Phobie im Kindes- und Jugendalter erfuhr bis vor kurzer Zeit wenig Aufmerksamkeit in der Forschung, sodass weniger emp irische Daten vorliegen als bei de r sozialen Phobie des Erwachsenenalters. Aber sie hat, wenn sie in diesem kritischen Lebensabschnitt auftr itt, zumeist langwierige Foigen.lndem eine große Anzahl an sozialen Situationen vermieden werden, werden der Erwerb sozialer Kompetenzen und der Aufbau von Freundschaften einqeschränkt.Gerade das späte Kindesalter und der Beginn des Jugendalters sind aber wichtige Zeitabschnitte, um Freundschaften aufzubauen, sich mit einer Peergroup zu identifizieren und eine ldentität zu entwickeln.
