Haematological Localisation

  • Chapter
Madkour’s Brucellosis

Abstract

There are no haematological findings that are specific or characteristic or could be used to diagnose brucellosis. The most common picture is that of normal haemoglobin, normal white blood cell count and normal platelet count. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is of no diagnostic value, being normal or accelerated. Leukopenia with relative lymphocytosis may alert the clinician to the possibility of brucellosis as a diagnosis but it is by no means a common finding. On the other hand, anaemia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, elevated ESR, features of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia (MAHA) are well-documented localisations of brucellosis.
