Die Schleimhaut des Respirationstraktes steht unmittelbar mit der Umwelt in Kontakt. Zur Abwehr exogener Noxen stehen physikalische, zelluläre und biochemische Mechanismen zur Verfügung. Physikalische Abwehrmechanismen (Mukusclearance) werden über Mukussekretion und den Mukustransport gesteuert.
