Abstract
“Congenital hip dislocation” is rarely present at birth. In the majority of cases, more subtle conditions exist at birth which, if untreated, will cause the hip to dislocate at a later stage. This led Lorenz (1920) to speak of the so-called congenital hip dislocation. This postnatal type of hip dislocation contrasts with the small group of prenatal dislocations in which the term “congenital hip dislocation” is appropriate. Most of these cases are quite severe. If the dislocation is associated with malformations of other body parts, the term teratologic hip dislocation is used.
