Summary
1.19 patients (38 eyes) with glaucoma or ocular hypertension, were treated during 6 months with metoprolol 3% eye drops twice daily. The intraocular pressure was significantly lowered by this drug in all the patients. The mean intraocular decrease over a 6 months period was 28.30%.
2. 15 patients (30 eyes) of the 19 patients treated with metoprolol, continued their treatment with timolol 0.5% eye drops twice daily for an other 6 months period. The intraocular pressure was lowered by 26.80% in this group.
3. 22 patients (42 eyes) were treated with timolol 0.5% eye drops twice daily during 6 months. The intraocular pressure was lowered by 30.55%.
There is no significant difference between the eye pressure lowering effect of metoprolol and timolol on long-term observation. The average decrease of eye pressure with both drugs is between 25% and 30%.
