Surgical Posterior Rhizotomies for the Treatment of Pain

Part of the book series: Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery ((NEUROSURGERY,volume 10))

Abstract

Spinal posterior rhizotomy was the first neurosurgical procedure developed for the treatment of intractable pain. Conceived by Dana in 1886, it was performed for the first time—independently in 1889—by Abbe in the U.S.A. and Bennett in Great Britain. After a period of rapid development, the technique went through a long decline, eclipsed by the spino-thalamic cordotomy, then by the stereotactic procedures on encephalic targets, and finally by neurostimulation of the pain inhibitory pathways.
