The first metatarso-sesamoid joint

Summary

The first metatarso-sesamoid joint is separately identified from the first metatarso-phalangeal joint and its anatomical characteristics are described from a study of one hundred anatomical specimens of normal adult and children's feet and two hundred radiographs of patients' feet.

The author finds that the first metatarso-sesamoid joint is assymmetrical both in children and adults, the medial surface being larger than the lateral. The medial sesamoid lies centrally, and the lateral sesamoid lies laterally, under the head of the first metatarsal.

A knowledge of the shape and function of this joint is important in understanding the pathology as well as the therapeutic indications of various conditions of forefoot imbalance, mainly of hallux valgus.

Résumé

La première articulation métatarsosésamoïdienne est distinguée de la première articulation métatarso-phalangienne, et ainsi dénommée. Ses caractéristiques anatomiques sont décrites à la suite de l'étude de cent pièces anatomiques d'adultes et d'enfants et de deux cents radiographies de malades.

Ceci a permis à l'auteur de vérifier que la première articulation métatarso-sésamoïdienne est asymétrique aussi bien chez l'enfant que chez l'adulte, la surface articulaire interne étant plus grande que l'externe.

Le sésamoïde interne est plus central, sous la tête du premier métatarsien et le sésamoïde externe est déplacé en dehors.

Il est important de connaître la fonction de cette articulation pour bien comprendre l'étiopathogénie et les indications thérapeutiques des divers déséquilibres de l'avant-pied, en particulier de l'Hallux Valgus.
