Summary
The postembryonal development, the lifetime and the replacement of the cortical cells of the vitreous were investigated by means of 3H-Thymidine and autoradiography. 23 litters of 4 to 8 albino rabbits at the age of 1 day to 6 months have been used for these experiments. In 10 rabbits repeated intravitreal injections of 3H-Thymidine have been made, 3 rabbits received the substance intravenously. Following birth the rate of proliferation of the cells of the vitreous is rising until the 15th to 20th day of life. The lifetime or better the G 0-time of these cells is short, their “halflife” is less than one week. After the 20th day of life the rate of proliferation becomes insufficient for maintaining the overall population of these cells. Increase and replacement of a large amount of these cells can be provided only by immigration of cells from outside into the vitreous.
The labeling experiments with 3H-Thymidine suggest that the cortical vitreous cells are continously immigrating hematogenous monocytes. They still show some proliferation in the vitreous, the rate of labeled cells beeing around 10 per 1000 following a single injection of 3H-Thymidine.
