Samenvatting
Het klinische beeld van kinkhoest wordt gekarakteriseerd door typische hoestbuien en de aansluitend gierende of piepende inspiratie (‘kinken’). Kinkhoest is endemisch in Nederland en komt op alle leeftijden voor. De incidentie is 0,7/1000 en is het hoogst bij kinderen tot 4 jaar (3,9) en in de groep 5-14 jaar (2,7).1,2 Sterfte door kinkhoest is zeldzaam, maar komt bij kinderen onder de 1 jaar zelfs in ontwikkelde landen nog altijd voor bij 1-2 per 1000 ziektegevallen.3 De toegenomen incidentie sinds 1996 wordt toegeschreven aan afnemende bescherming van het kinkhoestvaccin.
