Abstract
Minority teens face a host of difficulties in their quest to establish a sense of identity and social competence in their lives. For this group, competing elements like bicultural status, racial inequality, non-minority peers, and media, figure prominently in psychosocial development. This article discusses critical developmental, clinical and cultural factors affecting a number of Latina adolescents who participated in a social skills group at an outpatient mental health clinic. Emphasis is on the powerful existence of cultural themes that emerged from this process and how group facilitators responded via the integration of culturally competent practice under the framework of social skills.
