ULQIE: A quality-of-life inventory for parents of chronically ill children

Abstract. Background: Focusing parental quality of life is important in family-centered intervention programs for children with chronic diseases. Objective: To develop a short psychometric self-report instrument for clinical purposes. Methods: The questionnaire was constructed according to the principles of classical test theory. The subscales were developed by factor analysis. Results: The 29-item instrument contains the dimensions physical and daily functioning, satisfaction with the situation in the family, emotional distress, self-development, and well-being. Cronbach’s alpha for the subscales is between .75 and .88, for the global scale .91. Retest reliability is between .69 and .86. Some data indicating validity of the ULQIE are reported. Conclusions: The questionnaire can be recommended for measuring parental quality of life within the context of psychosocial support programs for chronically ill children.
