Abstract
OF the cells found at each level of the retinotopically organized retino-geniculo-cortical system of the cat, only those found in the cortex can be specifically sensitive to the orientation of a contrast line and its direction of movement1–3. These cells are arranged in vertical arrays (columns)2 according to their type of trigger feature.
