Effects of Corticosteroids on Coagulation of the Blood

Abstract

HYPERCOAGULABILITY of the blood in individuals who were receiving large doses of corticosteroids or adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) has been observed1–3. This effect has also been observed in patients receiving ACTH for cirrhosis of the liver4, a condition that usually depresses certain clotting factors. For investigation of this problem heparin and antithrombic activity were evaluated, fibrinogen level and platelet counts were determined1,4. Shortening of the clotting time was the most consistent coagulation finding in persons who were on cortico-steroid or ACTH1,4. The effect has been observed, particularly in siliconized tubes, in as little as 2–4 h after administration of 10 mg of prednisone5,6. This effect was somewhat less marked after administration of 25–50 units of ACTH5,6.
