Summary
My article attempts to elucidate the specific characteristics of conceptions of practice. The main thesis is that conceptions of practice break with all conceptions of intentionality. Consequently, a practice is, for example, not merely the material realization of so-called mental intentions. In positive terms, conceptions of practice take their point of departure in performances, which are co-consti- tuted by a ,passive moment' (Feuerbach). Additionally, the article calls attention to past theoretical traditions that are in danger of being overlooked in current debates on theories of practice. In conclusion, the relevance of a conception of practice is illustrated in the context of sports studies.
