이 논문의 목적은 뒤르켐의 자살론에 기초하여 한국 청소년의 자살행위가 다문화가족 유형에 따라 다르게 나타나는가에 관한 이론적 가설을 도출하고, 이를 경험적으로 검증하는 것이다. 분석자료로 2011년부터 2013년까지 수집된 청소년건강행태온라인조사를 활용하였다. 이 논문에서는 가족유형을 양 부모 한국출생, 어머니만 외국출생, 아버지만 외국출생, 양 부모 외국출생으로 분류하였고, 자살행위를 자살생각, 자살시도 및 자살시도로 인한 병원치료 경험으로 측정한 자살강도로 구분하였다. 횡단적 자료의 한계를 감안하여 통제변수를 달리하는 두 가지 모형을 추정하였으나 결과는 유사하였다. 분석결과, 어머니만 외국출생인 청소년의 자살생각과 자살시도 확률은 양 부모가 한국출생인 청소년과 다르지 않았으나 자살강도는 강한 것으로 나타났다. 아버지만 외국출생인 청소년은 일반 청소년보다 모든 자살행위 위험이 높은 것으로 나타났으나 조건부모형에서 예외적인 경우가 있었다. 양 부모가 외국출생인 청소년은 모든 자살행위에서 양 부모가 한국출생인 청소년보다 커다란 위험에 놓여 있었다. 이러한 분석결과는 다문화가족 청소년들이 처한 사회적 통합, 배제와 이탈 양상에 대한 사회적 관심과 정책적 배려가 필요함을 시사한다.

This paper attempts to unveil differential risks of suicidal behaviors among junior highand high-school adolescents by immigrant status in South Korea. We formulate theoretical predictions based on Durkheimian traditions in which suicide is conceived as an individual behavior structured by genuine social forces of social integration and regulation. Drawing on data from The Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey conducted in 2011 through 2013, we classify adolescents into four groups: those whose father and mother were born in South Korea, those whose mother was born in South Korea but not father, those whose father was born in South Korea but not mother, and those whose father and mother were not born in South Korea. Suicidal behaviors include suicidal thought, suicide attempt, and lethality of the suicide attempt during the last 12 months. Our analyses reveal that adolescents whose mother was born in South Korea but not father were put at similar risks of suicidal thought and suicide attempt with those whose father and mother was born in South Korea. But the former group was greatly more likely to attempt a serious suicide attempt enough to pay a visit to hospital than the latter group. Adolescents whose father was not born in Korea but mother was went through greater risks in all suicidal behaviors with an exception in the conditional effects on suicidal thought. The adolescents whose father and mother were foreign born were at greater risks in all three measures than those whose father and mother were native born. We discuss limitations of our paper and delineate future works.
