Osteoid Osteoma of a Cervical Vertebral Body

Abstract

We report a very rare case of 5-year-old boy with osteoid osteoma of the cervical vertebral body. The patient presented with a 6-month history of neck pain with radiation into the shoulder and arm on the left side, which was relieved by ibuprofen. Neurological examination and plain radiographs of the cervical spine were normal. CT scan and bone scintigraphy, rather than MRI suggested the pathological diagnosis, which was confirmed on histological examination. The patient underwent excision of the lesion via an anterior approach with complete resolution of the pain postoperatively.

Zusammenfassung

Es wird der seltene Fall eines fünf Jahre alten Jungen mit einem osteoidosteom des 5. Halswirbelkörpers vorgestellt. Bei dem Patienten bestanden über 6 Monate Nackenschmerzen ausstrahlend in Schulter und Arm, die mit Ibuprofen kontrolliert wurden. Die neurologische Untersuchung, sowie nativ Röntgenaufnahmen der Halswirbelsäule waren unauffällig. Die MRT wies einen raumfordernden Prozess des fünften Halswirbelkörpers nach. Aber erst die Computer-Tomographie und die Knochenszintigraphie wiesen auf ein osteoidosteom, welches histologisch bestätigt wurde. Der Prozess wurde über einen ventralen Zugang vollständig reseziert. Die präoperativen Beschwerden bildeten sich vollständig zurück.
