Refractive surgery encompasses surgical techniques that cannot be described as generally recognized medical treatment methods as yet. Therefore, both the German Society of Ophthalmology (DOG) and the Professional Association of German Ophthalmologists (BVA) consider an updated assessment of refractive surgical procedures to be essential. Furthermore, the measures prescribed by law to ensure the quality of medical practice (volume 5 of the German Social Insurance Code, Sozialgesetzbuch V, SGB V) should be set out in the form of verifiable structural, process, and outcome quality.
