The indications for liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) differ between Western and East-Asian countries. The European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) use the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system as the treatment strategy for HCC.
1,2 According to this staging system, the indication for liver resection is limited to a single HCC of BCLC stage 0 or A, while the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL) and the Japan Society of Hepatology (JSH) do not necessarily limit the indications for hepatic resection to cases with solitary HCC.
