Since the advent of mastectomy reconstruction utilizing a breast prosthesis, breast cancer patients have increasingly opted for mastectomy with immediate reconstruction, even for early-stage disease. The feasibility and oncologic safety of retaining the nipple–areolar complex in mastectomy further boosted the appeal of mastectomy for surgical management of breast cancer and risk reduction prophylaxis.
1 Despite the admirable aesthetic outcome, this does not always translate to a complication-free procedure. The most crucial complication in such procedure is the development of surgical site infection and the subsequent risk of implant loss and reconstruction failure.
