Many patients around the world who develop hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have underlying viral hepatitis, such as the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV).
1 While hepatectomy is the standard-of-care for patients with single, early-stage, resectable HCC under preserved liver function, it remains unclear whether having viral hepatitis has an effect on post-hepatectomy outcomes or not.
2 In fact, most studies in the literature included patients who were treated for HCC before 2014, predating the year when the success of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapies have kicked-off.
3 Thus, we investigated the potential role of viral hepatitis status on post-hepatectomy outcomes for patients with HCC in the DAA-era. …
