De kwaliteit van motivatie telt: over het promoten van intrinsieke doelen op een autonomieondersteunende wijze

Abstract

Leerkrachten in het middelbaar en hoger onderwijs worden steeds vaker geconfronteerd met spijbelende leerlingen (Casier & Thys, 1993; De Bleeckere, Schouppe & Thys, 1995). Van de leerlingen die wel naar school komen, lijken er vele ongeïnteresseerd en apathisch te zijn. Inderdaad, onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat de spontane interesse en geboeidheid voor schoolwerk gedurende het basis- en middelbare onderwijs gestaag afneemt (Anderman & Maehr, 1994; Lens & Decruyenaere, 1991). Om de interesse en medewerking van hun leerlingen op te wekken, proberen scholen en leerkrachten onder andere uit te leggen waarom het volgen van een bepaalde afstudeerrichting nuttig kan zijn, of waarom het oplossen en beheersen van bepaalde oefeningen zinvol is. Zo moedigen sommige scholen en vakleerkrachten potentiële studenten aan om bij hen te komen studeren omdat de richting perspectief biedt op het gemakkelijk vinden van een baan en het bereiken van financieel succes in het latere professionele leven. Andere vakleerkrachten stellen dat actief meewerken aan bepaalde vakken bijdraagt tot de persoonlijke ontwikkeling. Sommige sportleerkrachten leggen uit dat het goed uitvoeren van sportoefeningen ervoor zorgt dat je fit en gezond blijft. Anderen stellen dat je door te sporten overtollige kilo’s verliest of ten minste niet aankomt.
