I read with great interest the article “Treatment and Outcomes of Proximal Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma” by Patel et al.
1 This is a large nationwide study involving 2159 patients treated for cT1–3N0–1M0 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) between 2004 and 2016 from a USA administrative database. Patients with T4 and M1 lesions were not included. Factors associated with curative treatment were identified, including young age, cervical location, and T2 and T3 clinical stage. It is particularly interesting to note that esophagectomy was not associated with improved overall survival in multivariate analysis in the curatively treated cohort. …
