A 38-year-old man experienced alopecia areata while receiving haloperidol decanoate for paranoid schizophrenia. The man received long-acting haloperidol decanoate 50mg depot injections for paranoid schizophrenia [route and frequency not stated]; he experienced hair loss from his scalp with regrowth of white hair in the affected areas, 9 days after his first dose. Physical examination revealed areas of hair loss from the scalp. Alopecia areata was considered following dermatological assessment. Haloperidol decanoate was continued due to superb treatment efficacy for schizophrenia despite the hair loss.Author Comment“The Naranjo Adverse Drug Reaction Assessment yielded a score of 7, indicating a highly probable chance that the hair loss was due to the medication“. …
