Zusammenfassung

Die globale Ophthalmologie hat zum Ziel, das Sehvermögen, die Augengesundheit und die Funktionsfähigkeit weltweit zu maximieren. Sie trägt so zur allgemeinen Gesundheit, zum Wohlbefinden, zur sozialen Teilhabe und zur Lebensqualität eines jeden Einzelnen bei. Derzeit leben geschätzte 1,1 Mrd. Menschen mit einer Sehbehinderung, welche in 90 % der Fälle durch größtenteils kosteneffiziente Maßnahmen präveniert oder kuriert werden kann. Gleichzeitig leben 90 % der betroffenen Menschen in Regionen mit einer unzureichenden augenmedizinischen Versorgung. Diese Herausforderung war für die World Health Organization (WHO) und eine Gruppe von Nichtregierungsorganisationen der Anstoß für die globale Initiative VISION 2020, die nach 20 Jahren abgeschlossen wurde. Erfolge, Herausforderungen und Lehren daraus wurden herausgearbeitet und flossen in die aktuelle Kampagne 2030 IN SIGHT.
