Anhaltender postoperativer Schmerz („persistent postsurgical pain“ [PPSP]) oder chronischer postoperativer Schmerz (CPSP) ist eine anerkannte Komplikation nach operativen Eingriffen bei Erwachsenen. Eine allgemein akzeptierte Definition des PPSP gibt es nicht. Häufig verwendet wird aber eine Arbeitsdefinition, die von Macrae [32] vorgeschlagen und von Werner [45] präzisiert wurde: PPSP ist ein Schmerz, der nach einem operativen Eingriff mindestens 3 Monate anhält (verschiedene Autoren haben differierende Schwellenwerte von 2 bis 6 Monaten vorgeschlagen), der zuvor nicht vorhanden war oder sich in Charakter und Intensität von jeglichem präoperativem Schmerz wesentlich unterscheidet, der an der Operationsstelle oder in einem Projektionsareal lokalisiert ist und der sich nicht auf eine andere Ursache zurückführen lässt (beispielsweise ein Tumorrezidiv oder eine Infektion). Häufigkeiten zwischen 10 und 80 % wurden bei Erwachsenen für ein breites Spektrum operativer Verfahren angegeben [34]. Der anhaltende Schmerz kann zu erheblichem Leid sowie zu einer funktionellen Einschränkung des Betroffenen führen und das Gesundheitssystem wie auch die wirtschaftlichen Ressourcen belasten. …
